On Saturday, May 1, 2010 the RI BASS Federation in conjunction with the Barrington (RI) Recreation Department held a fishing clinic for children, six to fourteen years of age. Approximately twenty, along with their parents, participated in this event at the Brick Yard Pond, in Barrington, RI.
The Barrington Recreation Department contacted our organization, RI BASS Federation and inquired if we would be interested in conducting an informational fishing clinic for ‘kids’. I did not hesitate, as I knew members would be eager to participate.
John Hinckley and Steven Worden, members of the RI BASS Federation Nation came forward and were beyond prepared for their day. They developed posters and brought tables to display illustrations on 4 topics: A ‘Clinch Knot; a ‘Texas Rig Worm’, the de-picking of a Senko ‘Texas Rig’ and lastly a ‘Wacky Style’.
Along with their descriptive pictures, John and Steve provided fishing line, hooks and packaged samples of Senko’s and worms from their own tackle for the children to work with. They were taught the skill of tying a clinch knot to a hook and learned about the different bait types.
Although this day was held for children, the parents were attentive and also showed great interest. You can depict this from the pictures shown.
All were appreciative of the RI Bass Federations’ efforts, especially on part of John and Steve for making the day most memorable for all involved.
I cannot stress how proud I am of John and Steve for taking the initiative and volunteering their time. Kudos to you on a job well done!

On May 3, 2008, Durfee High School students "Buddied-Up" for the Annual Big
Buddy Fishing Derby. Although the weather was chilly and grey, bright smiles
kept the fish biting. Students from the Marine Science classes at Durfee
volunteered to help students from the ungraded, special-needs classes.
Students enjoyed their new friends who aided them in catching sunfish and
bass at the BCC Pond. An instructional session led by Mr. Skammels kicked
off the event. Students were treated to donuts before the competition began.
Trophies and ribbons were awarded to all participants for their efforts. A
pizza party concluded the event. As the students inhaled their pizza, Mr.
Skammels surprised them by letting them know that they could take their
fishing poles home as a gift! Other Durfee teachers offering their support
at the Derby were Matt Tweedie, Bob Fitton, Brendan O'Neil, and Steve Abdow.
Special thanks to the " Castway RI Bassmasters" club ,Dan Moniz and all the
club members that helped out as judges . Dan and his club members also
donated club shirts to all the participants. |
