JR Bassmasters
With Just 9 weeks into 2006, the youth of RI and Jr Bassmasters have had a very
busy season already. On Sunday January 8, we all got together at
Nino’s to finalize 2005 with our Awards Banquet for the RI Jr Bassmasters and 2005
Casting Kids Champions. With Jr Bassmasters, Casting Kids, families, friends, boat captains,
sponsors and many supporting members from the RI B.A.S.S.
Federation Nation the day brought together all the components of the RI Bass
Federation Youth Program. Within a week, Thomas Blank and Jason Gebler RI
Casting Kids State Champions would be in Florida to compete at the Casting Kids
Semi Finals. The boys are also members of the RI Jr Bassmasters and did very
well but just missed the cut to make it to the finals.
Quickly we move on to mid February, JR Bassmaster World Championship.
Brittany Johnson, our State Champion in the 11-14
age division, and Mike Marley, 15-18 division, along with their families and I and
my wife where off to Kissimmee Florida. At the kick off banquet, Brittany was
paired with Gary Klein and Mike is in boat 50 with Terry Scroggins. It was
quite a night with all the Jr State Champions from the US, Canada and South
Africa along with all the Pro’s fishing the Classic including our very own Joel
St Germain. After we all learned of Joel St Germain's win to secure a second
trip to the Citgo Bassmaster Classic. I contacted two of Joel’s sponsors,
Okuma and Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits, and ran an idea by them, both sent hats
then Russ from R S Embroidery added a personal touch of Git-R Done Joel 06. At
the JWC banquet, we donned our caps to the surprise of Joel and proudly wore
them during the JR World Championship. Both Brittany and Mike fished extremely
hard but with weather conditions changing by the minute the fishing had shut
down. Mike Marley did get a 1lb 2 oz Bass to the scale while Brittany was among
the many State Champions that didn't have any keepers. Regardless both of the
RI Jr Bassmasters State Champions had smiles from ear to ear and will never
forget the accomplishment of getting the chance to fish the Jr Bassmaster World
Championship.
Just this past Sunday March 5th, the
RI Jr Bassmasters had their first meeting of 2006. They re-elected Mike Broggi Jr
President, Mike Marley Vice President, Alex Ferri as Treasurer and Delainey
Broggi for her second term as Secretary. With 14 new members this year already,
we are planning on as 35-45 Jr anglers in the program. While we do have a
schedule with specific dates it may be necessary to have certain age groups at
some tournaments. We have 3 divisions under 11, 11-14 and 15-18. Again this
year Triton Boats, Bassett Boat Co, Erickson Bait and Tackle, Exclusive Auto
body, RS Embroidery, Langford and Sons Land Clearing, Calvino Law have all re-committed
their support along with 3 new sponsors; DXM Computers, VisitNewEngland.com and
L.J. & Son Asphalt Paving. With the support of The RI B.A.S.S. Federation
Nation and our sponsor club the Adult Bassmasters we have a bright and strong
outlook going forward.
Some of this year's other events, will be a NorthEast Jr. Open on Webster Lake August 5, 2006.
I have met with Youth directors from all over the country and as of now I have
Maine, NH, CT, Mass and possibly Vermont, Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, NJ and
Jr Anglers from South Africa. This tournament will be for the top 3 anglers in
each age division and is also open to any Jr Angler Program from B.A.S.S, TBF
and others. We do have sponsors lined up and will be having a cookout after the
Tournament. All is in place for the annual 2-day Tournament and Campout at Johnson’s
Pond September 8-10th. A program called C.A.S.T. for
Kids Foundation will be having an event on Saturday 23rd 2006 and with all
the RI Jr Bassmasters will be helping at that event.
Sincerely,
Mike Broggi Sr, Youth Director, RI B.A.S.S Federation Nation
