Colorado’s Matt Massey Takes Lead at Bassmaster Federation Nation Championship; Six Anglers to Earn Berths in 2010 Bassmaster Classic

TAVARES, Fla. – Matt Massey of Lakewood, Co., only registered four fish during the first day of competition at the 2009 Bassmaster Federation Nation Championship presented by Yamaha Outboards and Skeeter Boats on the Harris Chain of Lakes out of Tavares, Fla., but he made them count, totaling 14 pounds, 12 ounces, good enough to take a modest lead in the world’s premier amateur championship.

“Today was totally different than practice,” said Massey, who is one of 55 anglers competing here.  “It was windy and cloudy Tuesday, but today it was flat with bluebird skies.  I was getting five or six quality bites in practice, but today I had to work for every bite and cover a lot of water to get what I got.”

A member of the Colorado Bassmasters, Massey thinks he can repeat today’s performance if his spots replenish.  If that scenario plays out, Massey would take home an invitation to the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series and a Skeeter/Yamaha boat rig valued at $63,250.  Additionally, he would earn one of the six berths up for grabs in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic (Feb. 19-21, Birmingham, Ala., Lay Lake).

In second was Skip Sjobeck of Randolph, Vt., who boated only two bass but posted a total of 12 pounds, 5 ounces.  One of those bass, a 9-5 beast, was big enough to take big bass honors for the day. Sjobeck said he could be on the pattern to win the tournament.

“I’ve got the big fish pattern figured out, I’m not going for a limit of small fish,” he said. “If I were to get a limit, it would only be in the 7-9 pound range, so I’m going for big fish.”

Rounding out the top five was Tom Jessop of Delhart, Texas, who had an 11-pound, 5-ounce, which put him third.  Hot on Jessop’s heels with 11-4 was Brent Long of Catawba, N.C., in fourth.  Randy Wieczorek of Buffalo City, Wis., was fifth with 10-15.

The Federation Nation Championship is represented by anglers from six divisions: the Northern, Southern, Mid-Atlantic, Western, Central and Eastern. The top finishing angler from each division earns a 2010 Bassmaster Classic berth.  The full standings can be found below.

In the Mid-Atlantic lead was Gerry Jooste of Harare, Zimbabwe, who is 15th in the overall standings. The Southern division leader was Long while the Northern leader was Wieczorek.  Leading the Western division was tournament leader Massey while Sjobeck headed up the Eastern division.  Jessop led the pack in the Central division.

Bryan Schmidt, the defending champion of the event, is still within striking distance of earning his second consecutive Classic berth through the Central division.  The Olney, Texas, angler was 11th with 8 pounds.

The full field will compete for three days.

Launches, at 7:30 a.m. ET daily, and weigh-ins, at 3:45 p.m., will be at Wooten Park, 200 S. Rockingham Ave., Tavares.  Fans can watch live, streaming video of all three days of weigh-ins at Bassmaster.com,  along with real-time leaderboards. Daily standings, stories and photo galleries also will be available at Bassmaster.com.

Also during the week, the Junior Bassmaster World Championship will take place on nearby Lake Yale. Kids in two age divisions (11-14, 15-18) will weigh their bass at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, on the Federation Nation Championship stage in Tavares.

The Bassmaster CastingKids National Championship will also be determined at the end of this week. Kids in two age groups ( 7-10, 11-14 ) will cast, pitch and flip to targets. The CastingKids finals will begin at noon Friday, Oct. 30, at the Lake Sumter Community College gymnasium in Leesburg, Fla.

Youth prizes will include trophies and scholarships.

All BASS events are free and open to the public.

Massachusetts’s Randy Phillips Wins Bassmaster Federation Nation Championship; Six Anglers Earn Berths in 2010 Bassmaster Classic

TAVARES, Fla. – Randy Phillips of Oxford, Mass., closed strong Friday, securing a berth in the 2010 Bassmaster Classic and the overall win in the 2009 Bassmaster Federation Nation Championship on the Harris Chain of Lakes with a three-day total of 31 pounds, 1 ounce.

With the victory, Phillips also scored a Skeeter/Yamaha rig valued at more than $60,000.

“It feels great, I’m ecstatic,” he said. “I could not have asked for a better tournament, everything turned out great and I’m very excited to go to the Classic, this is my dream.”

Despite landing a limit – no certainty this week – Phillips only had 6 pounds, 15 ounces on the final day of competition.  But tough conditions prevailed and many of the challengers slipped.   Don Hogue of Pasco, Wash., had the lead heading into the final day but fell short, claiming runner-up honors with a three-day total of 29-1.

But Hogue did take solace in the fact that he earned a 2010 Bassmaster Classic berth by way of champion of the Western division. Phillips took the Eastern division.

“This is surreal, it’s something you dream about like you dream of going to the moon,”  Hogue said. “I’m kind of overwhelmed, but I’m sure most of the guys are.”

Hogue describes himself as a West coast guy, having never fished in Florida or in Alabama.  Hogue will fish there, on Alabama’s Lay Lake, for the 2010 Classic, which is set for Feb. 19-21 out of Birmingham, Ala.

In the Southern division, Brent Long of Cornelius, N.C., held on with a five-fish limit that went 7-3 Friday. Long will be fishing his second Classic and his only other Classic experience came on Lay in 2007. Long was fourth this week.

Jeff Freeman of Max Meadows, Va., held off Gerry Jooste of Harare, Zimbabwe, to secure his second Classic berth. Freeman won the 2007 Bassmaster Federation Nation Championship on Florida’s Lake Tohopekaliga and has also scored victory in Bassmaster events as a co-angler.  He will represent the Mid-Atlantic division. Freeman placed seventh in the tournament with 24-05.

Despite finishing 12th in the tournament, Bryan Schmidt of Olney, Texas, had a good enough tournament to take his second consecutive Classic berth.  Schmidt bested fellow Texan Tom Jessop of Dalhart and Samuel Anthony of Independence, La.  Schmidt will look to repeat his strong 2008 performance when he finished sixth.

To round the Classic qualifiers, Jody Adkins of North Canton, Ohio, will represent the Northern division on the strength of his third-place finish in the tournament.  The full standings can be found below.

In the Junior Bassmaster World Championship, which played out on nearby Lake Yale, Jake Cook of Kennewick, Wash., bested the 15-18 division with 13 pounds, 1 ounce.  John Duarte of Middle River, Md., won the 11-14 division with 5 pounds.  Youth prizes included scholarships for the top finishers.

The Bassmaster CastingKids National Championship was also determined with Sierra Voisin of Mildmay, Ontario, Canada, scoring her third CastingKids victory in the 7-10 age division.  Jared Raymer of Brandenburg, Ky., won the 11-14 division besting Shauni Voisin, Sierra’s older sister.

Kids in two age groups ( 7-10, 11-14 ) casted, pitched and flipped to targets.  Full stories can be found on Bassmaster.com.
